Auction of Antique Vehicles

Auction of Antique Vehicles

On October 8, 2005, I will be selling several antique horse drawn vehicles at Gardners Auction in Missoula, Montana. I plan to include the following:
1. Canopy top surrey with original appointments including carriage lanterns.
2. Two seated cutter (fancy light sleigh). Not shown
3. Albany cutter, sound materials but needing repairs.
4. Mountain buggy. Not shown
5. Studebaker wagon - with springs.
6. Lumber wagon running gear. Not shown
7. Hay mower. Not shown
8. Several plain work harnesses with steel reinforced wooden hames. Not shown

All items except the mower have always been stored indoors. Items 4 and 5 were purchased directly from their original owner, John Fulton, in the late 1940's. He was a pioneer owner of the Big Ox Mine near Canyon Creek, Montana and special ordered the vehicles, including having springs installed on the Studebaker wagon.

Items 1, 3, and 5 are pictured on this blog. Because the other items are "packed away" behind other stored belongings and I live far from where they are currently stored, I am unable to provide photos at this time.

Sale will be held at Gardner's Auction, 4810 Highway 93 South, Missoula, MT. Visit the website: http://gardnersauction.com or contact gardners@montana.com (phone 406 251 2221) for time of sale and information about other antiques to be auctioned at the same sale.

Antique Saddles for Sale

ANTIQUE SADDLES
For Sale

I will be selling the following saddles. I am still determining their values but I am posting photos and information now so that you will know what will be offered. If you are interested, contact me so that I can notify you about prices or time and place of auction when I know that. If you have information that will help me determine their value, I will appreciate hearing that from you - even if you are not yourself interested in purchasing.
  1. HH Heiser 1880’s or before. Square skirt, full double rigged slick fork in very good condition. Stamped with #44. I have ridden it and it is very comfortable.

  2. Another similar saddle of similar vintage. I am attempting to determine maker but the stamp is barely legible. Front skirt has another stamp “Warranted steel fork”. Quite good condition but slightly lighter built than the Heiser.

  3. Hamley single rigged brass horn saddle. Probably pre-1920s. Though it shows scuffs and wear it is very sound and can be used as is.

  4. McLellan US Army saddle tree. Stamp “AHB” on right rear skirt. Stamp “R” on left front skirt. Well worn leather. No stirrups or stirrup straps. Solid and sound tree.
Photos are numbered to coincide with items listed above.

Is it An original Pony
Express Saddle?

Expert opinions requested...

I acquired the saddle in 1970 in Helena, Montana. I had the cantle cover and horn cover repaired and replaced the saddle strings, so there is different leather at those spots.

I have tree maker information in a safe deposit box that I will retrieve in late September, 2005.
I will also re-examine the saddle at that time for weight and maker stamp.

Note the wear spot near the bottom of the fork cover. There is identical wear on the opposite side of the saddle. Is it from mochila rubbing?

What is the purpose of the laced stubby strap in the latigo ring?
